Shelby Thurman: From Junior Dragsters to Big Wins and Bigger Dreams
Few racers can say they’ve spent nearly their entire life at the racetrack. For 20-year-old Shelby Thurman of Portland, Tennessee, racing isn’t just a hobby — it’s woven into her story from the very beginning. From kicking during burnouts before she was even born to collecting more than 100 junior dragster wins, Shelby’s journey is one fueled by family, determination, and a deep love for the sport.
Shelby recently joined the Women’s Motorsports Network Podcast to share her incredible racing journey, the unforgettable moments that shaped her career, and why racing continues to be the center of her world.
Born Into Racing
Racing runs deep in Shelby’s family. Her grandfather raced, which inspired her father to get involved in motorsports as well. Long before Shelby climbed into a race vehicle herself, she was already spending weekends at the track with her family.
Her mom even jokes that while pregnant, every time Shelby’s dad did a burnout, Shelby would start kicking. That was the first sign she was destined to become a racer.
Shelby received her first junior dragster on her seventh birthday and immediately fell in love with the sport. What started with local racing at Music City Raceway quickly grew into traveling across the Southeast competing at some of the biggest junior dragster events in the country.
As her skills developed, so did her success.
Building a Winning Career
Shelby’s junior dragster career was filled with major accomplishments. Over the years, she collected more than 100 wins, multiple championships, Iron Man trophies, and earned recognition from DragChamp for her success in the sport.
One of her proudest stretches came during events like the Mississippi Madness races and the Dream Team competitions, where she consistently found herself in the winner’s circle. She also became part of the FTI Farm Team and partnered with respected companies in the racing industry during her final years in junior dragsters.
But one weekend in Montgomery, Alabama stands above the rest.
The Weekend Shelby Will Never Forget
Every racer dreams of having a perfect weekend. Shelby actually lived it.
During a race weekend in Montgomery, she won a Friday night gamblers race, followed it up with a junior dragster win the next morning, captured a team race victory later that evening, and then closed out the weekend with a $10,000 win on Sunday.
The accomplishment was almost hard for Shelby to process in the moment.
She explained that it didn’t truly sink in until weeks later when she realized just how special that weekend had been. Seeing her dad emotional after the victories made the moment even more meaningful because of all the work he puts into helping her succeed.
For Shelby, racing has always been a team effort between her and her father.
“He works on all the cars. He makes sure my car is better than his,” Shelby shared during the interview.
Moving Into Big Cars
After aging out of junior dragsters in 2023, Shelby shifted her focus toward racing her beloved 1991 square-body S10 truck. The transition came with challenges, including a rough first season while learning a completely new setup with a new engine, transmission, converter, and carburetor.
Like many racers, Shelby experienced moments of frustration when things weren’t going well. At one point, she even stepped away from racing for a short break to reset mentally before returning with renewed motivation.
That perseverance paid off, and Shelby believes her truck is finally headed in the right direction.
Her racing program continues to grow with support from sponsors and partners including Wild Willy Fuel Additives, BTE, Clots, Phoenix, and Get’M Performance Products.
More Than Just a Racer
While Shelby’s racing accomplishments are impressive, her personality and passion for helping others stand out just as much.
She loves talking with younger racers, encouraging them, and sharing advice from her own experiences. Whether it’s helping someone understand their race car or inspiring young girls to chase their dreams, Shelby embraces being a role model in the racing community.
One lesson she continues to carry with her came from legendary racer Scotty Richardson:
“You have peaks and valleys. When you’re at the peak, there’s nowhere to go but the valley. When you’re in the valley, all you can do is go back to the peak.”
It’s advice that applies not only to racing, but to life itself.
Looking Ahead
At just 20 years old, Shelby’s racing future is only beginning.
She dreams of racing bigger events, continuing to travel the country, and someday competing at Bristol Dragway in her S10 truck after spending so many years racing there in junior dragsters.
With her determination, talent, and strong support system behind her, there’s little doubt Shelby Thurman will continue making waves in the drag racing world for years to come.
