Jernigan Racing Is Proving That Women Belong in Motorsports
For the women of Jernigan Racing, racing isn’t just a hobby.
It’s family.
In this inspiring episode of the Women’s Motorsports Network Podcast, host Melinda Russell talks with Bobbie Jo Jernigan and her daughter Riley Jernigan about life as women racers competing together at Owosso Speedway.
The family’s racing journey began after Bobbie Jo’s oldest daughter became interested in the sport compact division while watching races at the track. Before long, the family built a race car and entered competition themselves.
Eventually, Bobbie Jo climbed into the driver’s seat too.
Her first experience behind the wheel was overwhelming. She left the track convinced racing wasn’t for her. But after giving it one more try, something clicked — and she’s been hooked ever since.
Today, the family races together, supports one another, and continues building their presence in Michigan short track racing.
One of the most emotional parts of the episode centers around Riley’s battle with severe knee problems that required multiple major surgeries within a short period of time.
Despite setbacks, Riley remains determined to return to racing and continue inspiring younger girls at the racetrack.
She shared how much it means when young fans approach her at the track and say they want to race someday too.
That representation matters.
The episode also dives into the realities of balancing racing with work, school, family responsibilities, sponsorships, social media, and the emotional ups and downs that come with competition.
The Jernigans also discuss how much the racing world has evolved for women drivers over the last several years.
While there’s still progress to be made, they believe women racers are gaining more respect and acceptance than ever before.
Most importantly, they want other girls and women to know there is absolutely a place for them in motorsports.
Their message is simple:
Don’t give up. Claim your space. Keep pushing forward.
