Mini Wedges Are Keeping Racing Alive — And It Starts With Kids
Mini Wedges Are Keeping Racing Alive — And It Starts With Kids
There’s something special about watching a kid climb into a race car for the first time.
The nerves.
The excitement.
The spark.
That’s exactly what’s happening every week at Kalamazoo Speedway thanks to Kenny Head and the Mini Wedge program.
After more than 40 years in racing, Kenny could have stepped away.
Instead, he leaned in.
He’s now leading a program that’s introducing kids as young as four years old to racing—and changing the future of the sport in the process.
From 9 Kids to Over 50
When Kenny first got involved, there were barely a dozen kids participating.
Today?
More than 50 kids rotate through the program, with around 25–30 racing on a typical weekend.
That kind of growth doesn’t happen by accident.
It happens because someone cared enough to build something.
It’s Not Just Racing—It’s Community
One of the most powerful parts of this program is how it welcomes new families.
Not everyone comes from a racing background.
Some families show up just curious…
And leave with race cars.
That only happens when people take the time to say:
“Hey, let me show you how this works.”
Girls Are Showing Up Strong
About 40% of the racers are girls—and growing.
And once they put the helmet on?
They’re not “girl racers.”
They’re racers.
Fast. Competitive. Fearless.
Why This Matters
If we want racing to survive, we need to invest in the next generation.
Mini Wedges are doing exactly that.
They’re building:
✔ Future drivers
✔ Future crew members
✔ Future fans
✔ Future leaders
