From Science Fair Project to Motorsports Lubrication Expert: Jessica Trout’s Journey with Schaefer Oil

From Science Fair Project to Motorsports Lubrication Expert: Jessica Trout’s Journey with Schaefer Oil

When people think about motorsports performance, they usually picture engines, horsepower, and drivers pushing the limits. But behind every powerful engine is something just as critical — the right lubrication.

On this episode of the Women's Motorsports Network Podcast, host Melinda Russell speaks with Jessica Trout, a lubrication consultant with Schaefer Oil, about how the right products can dramatically impact performance in racing and beyond.

A Family Business Journey

Jessica’s story began when she was just in eighth grade. Her father, Gary Trout, had started working with Schaefer Oil, and Jessica helped him by writing orders while he faxed them in.

What began as a simple science fair project turned into a lifelong career.

Today, Jessica works alongside her father helping customers find the best lubrication solutions for their equipment.

A 186-Year Legacy

Schaefer Oil has been manufacturing lubricants since the late 1800s and is still a family-owned American company headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri.

One of the company’s early products was Black Beauty Grease, originally developed for railroad trains. Over time, the company expanded into oils, greases, transmission fluids, industrial cleaners, and specialty lubricants used in industries around the world.

Even today, Schaefer emphasizes Made in America manufacturing, producing products and packaging within the United States.

Lubrication Consultant vs Salesperson

One of the things that makes Jessica’s approach unique is how she views her role.

She doesn't consider herself a salesperson.

Instead, she acts as a lubrication consultant, helping companies determine the best products for their equipment based on real-world testing and independent analysis.

This means:

·       Visiting customers in person

·       Reviewing equipment needs

·       Testing oil samples through independent labs

·       Identifying mechanical issues before they become major failures

Racing and High Performance Engines

Jessica’s work has increasingly moved into the world of motorsports, particularly sprint car racing.

Working with engine builders, dyno testing, and racing teams, she helps determine the best lubrication for engines that operate under extreme conditions.

In some cases, the difference between oils can mean:

·       Higher horsepower

·       Less engine wear

·       Longer rebuild intervals

·       Cleaner bearings and components

Jessica shared examples of engine builders opening engines after races and finding bearings that look nearly brand new — a powerful demonstration of how lubrication can impact performance.

A Close-Knit Racing Community

Another aspect Jessica appreciates about racing is the community.

Unlike many industries, engine builders and teams often collaborate and share information.

When one builder sees positive results from a product, word spreads quickly.

This type of collaboration has helped Schaefer Oil expand its presence within the racing world.

Applications Beyond Racing

While racing is exciting, Jessica emphasized that the same lubrication principles apply across many industries.

Schaefer products are used in:

·       Agriculture

·       Trucking

·       Manufacturing

·       Construction

·       Energy plants

·       Food processing

·       Industrial equipment

Whether it's a sprint car engine or a farm tractor, proper lubrication can reduce wear, increase efficiency, and extend equipment life.

Helping Customers Save Money

At the end of the day, Jessica says the goal is simple:

Help customers protect their equipment and save money.

By selecting the right lubricant, companies can reduce downtime, extend maintenance intervals, and prevent costly repairs.
