From Motorcycles to NASCAR: The Powerful Journey of Racer Dystany Spurlock

From Motorcycles to NASCAR: The Powerful Journey of Racer Dystany Spurlock

Motorsports dreams often begin in childhood, but turning those dreams into reality takes determination, resilience, and a willingness to push beyond every obstacle. That is exactly what Dystany Spurlock has done.

In this episode of the Women's Motorsports Network Podcast, host Melinda Russell sits down with Dystany to talk about her unique path through the racing world—from riding motorcycles as a child to preparing for her debut in the ARCA Menards Series.

Growing Up With Speed

Dystany’s love of motorsports began before she could even walk. Her parents gave her a Barbie Jeep and Corvette as a toddler, and by age three she was already riding motorcycles with her family.

Living just two miles from Richmond Raceway, NASCAR was a regular part of her childhood. She remembers Sundays spent watching races with her grandfather, windows open so they could hear the roar of engines from the track.

At age five she got her first go-kart, and by twelve she was attending drag races with her godfather. That experience sparked a lifelong passion for motorcycle drag racing.

Making a Name in Motorcycle Racing

At sixteen, Dystany received her first motorcycle—a Suzuki GSXR 750—and began racing almost immediately.

Not long after, she had the opportunity to race a brand-new BMW S1000RR, where she set records and eventually became a BMW ambassador.

That success helped launch her career, but her ambitions were always bigger.

She dreamed of competing at the highest levels of motorsports—including NHRA drag racing and NASCAR.

Turning Dreams Into Opportunity

Breaking into professional racing is never easy, especially for drivers without family connections in the sport.

Dystany quickly realized she had to learn the business side of motorsports.

She built sponsorship proposals, created a professional media kit, and began networking with potential partners.

That work eventually led her to Fox Techa, the company that helped support her debut in NHRA drag racing.

Now Fox Techa continues to support her as she prepares to make the next big step in her career.

The Road to NASCAR

This year marks an exciting milestone.

Dystany will make her debut in the ARCA Menards Series, beginning at Hickory Motor Speedway on March 28.

She will also compete in a partial season of NHRA drag racing.

Balancing two forms of motorsports may sound challenging, but Dystany says the skills actually complement each other.

Drag racing sharpens her reaction time and precision, while stock car racing requires strategy, race craft, and track awareness.

Racing With a Purpose

While Dystany loves competing, she says her greatest motivation comes from inspiring others.

She frequently visits inner-city schools and speaks to young students about opportunities in motorsports.

Many of them have never considered racing—or even realized it could be a career.

That’s why she created the What's Your Destiny Foundation, which will introduce children to motorsports through junior dragsters, bandoleros, and legend cars.

Her goal is not only to teach kids how to race, but also how to analyze data, maintain their health, and understand the business of racing.

A Role Model for the Next Generation

Representation matters.

Dystany hopes her presence in the sport will help more women—and especially women of color—see that motorsports is a place where they belong.

As she says,

If you see her, you can be her.

With a growing fan base, a powerful story, and a relentless drive to succeed, Dystany Spurlock is a racer to watch.

And her journey is just getting started.
