Abby Maurer: Passion, Persistence, and the Drive to Succeed

From Ice Cream Bribes to Championship Trophies: Abby Maurer is Racing Toward a Bright Future

At just 14 years old, Abby Maurer has already built an impressive racing résumé filled with championships, feature wins, and unforgettable moments on the racetrack. But beyond the trophies and checkered flags, Abby is helping inspire the next generation of girls to believe they belong in motorsports too.

During her appearance on the Women’s Motorsports Network Podcast, Abby shared the story of how her racing journey began — and surprisingly, it all started with an ice cream bribe.

A Racing Career Sparked by Ice Cream

Growing up around racing, Abby had already spent years at the racetrack watching family members compete. Her grandfather, great-uncle, and father all raced before her, making motorsports part of the family’s DNA. But Abby herself wasn’t initially planning to race.

Her father had purchased a Mini Wedge that mostly sat unused in the shop until one day he offered Abby five dollars and a trip to the gas station for ice cream if she would simply sit in the car for a photo.

That small moment changed everything.

Soon after, Abby began practicing and eventually watched fellow racers — including sisters battling for the lead — compete on track. Seeing girls race competitively sparked something inside her, and before long, Abby was climbing into a Mini Wedge herself.

Building a Championship Career

Since starting her racing career in 2023, Abby has quickly established herself as one of Michigan’s top young Mini Wedge racers. Her collection of trophies already includes championships from Owosso Speedway and Owosso Motorsports Park, along with titles from the Grit and Drift Series.

One of her proudest moments came at the season-opening Intimidator race at Kalamazoo Speedway, where Abby started at the back of the field multiple times due to on-track incidents but still fought her way to victory.

“I started last in that race… and still drove up to the front and won,” Abby shared proudly.

For Abby, racing from the back isn’t something to fear — it’s something she enjoys.

“You can weave your way through them,” she explained. “It’s more fun than just driving circles out front.”

Racing as a Girl in a Male-Dominated Sport

One of the most powerful parts of Abby’s story is her honesty about the challenges girls sometimes face in racing.

According to Abby, some boys race girls differently on the track — often more aggressively — simply because they don’t want to get beaten by a female competitor.

But Abby has learned how to handle herself.

“Some of them kind of have to do it a couple times before they understand,” she laughed while describing how she occasionally gives the contact right back.

Rather than letting those moments discourage her, Abby uses them as motivation.

“I want to prove them wrong and show them that I can do it,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if I’m a girl or not.”

Inspiring Young Girls at the Track

One of Abby’s favorite racing memories didn’t happen during a race at all. It happened after a podium sweep where the top three finishers were all girls.

As the drivers climbed from their cars and removed their helmets, Abby heard a young girl excitedly yelling from the fence.

“It’s a girl! They’re all girls!”

Moments like that remind Abby just how important representation is in motorsports. Whether she realizes it or not, every lap she runs is helping show young girls that racing is for them too.

More Than a Racer

Away from the track, Abby is a busy ninth-grade student involved in volleyball, tennis, and band.

She also understands the importance of teamwork and preparation — lessons she believes racing teaches better than almost anything else.

“You’ve got to be smart,” Abby explained. “You’ve got to think about what happens if you make certain decisions.”

That mindset has helped Abby mature both on and off the track.

Expanding Her Racing Journey

As if championships in Mini Wedges weren’t enough, Abby is already preparing to branch out into flat kart racing as well. After earning second-place finishes during her first experiences in a flat kart, she plans to race both divisions this season.

The additional seat time will only continue helping her grow as a driver.

And with her competitive mindset, strong family support system, and fearless attitude behind the wheel, there’s little doubt Abby Maurer’s racing future is just getting started.

Whether she’s charging from the back of the field, inspiring little girls in the grandstands, or proving doubters wrong one lap at a time, Abby is showing exactly what the future of women in motorsports looks like.
